Revived from ruins to shine in a renewed splendour
For 200 years, the Frauenkirche symbolised the wealth and faith of Dresden’s citizens. After its destruction in World War II, the Frauenkirche fell into ruined slumber for many years.
While the ruins served as a reminder of the horrors of war, they also kept the memories of Europe’s most prominent baroque church structure alive. After Germany’s reunification, a citizens’ initiative led by famous trumpeter Prof. Güttler began asking for the church to be rebuilt. The euphoria of the initiators and the positive response to “Dresden’s call” from all over the world were infectious, and it was decided the structure would be rebuilt under the following conditions: Financing almost exclusively through donations, archaeological rubble clearance, and true-to-original reconstruction using the recovered stone, to be completed by Dresden’s 800th anniversary in 2006.
The piles of rubble were cleared away stone by stone, starting on 4 January 1993, and all fragments still usable were measured, catalogued and stored. Computer technology was used to determine many stones’ original positioning in the walling, based on their location amongst the rubble. In total, over 8,000 pieces were retrieved, with 3,539 being incorporated into the external façade.
Although the ruins no longer exist as a memorial, the traces of war will still be visible for a long time to come: pale, new stones alternate with blackened original stones in the external walls. It will take decades for them to blend with one another.
The Protestant Frauenkirche was sanctified on 30 October 2005 (Reformation Feast) and, reaching a height of 91.24 m, is one of the tallest places of worship in the baroque city. The Frauenkirche has been part of Dresden’s cityscape ever since, resuming its well-known, distinctive place in the world famous skyline.
